Perfect pop music for kids if you ignore the cigarettes, guns, and PBR.
Slutty Hearts is a fun, swoony-dark-pop trio from Portland, Oregon, who make songs that make you wanna dance and get it on. With music equally charming and DIY in nature Slutty Hearts cut and paste the best elements of lo-fi garage rock. It’s gritty, it’s raw, it’s sexy, it’s a bewitching vamp of simplicity.
The band began back in spring of 2007, where Marty and Marisa needed a creative escape from the seasoned doldrums of their shared job at a Southeast Portland pizza joint. The two played as a duo for a few years making minimalist kitschy garage pop on their days off and into the cold, cold night of a dank practice space located on the grimy waterfront of the industrial Southeast Portland.
With the addition of Cathleen on keys, Slutty Hearts have transformed their cutesy sound into more tongue-in-cheek dance party for those who are always going to remain young at heart – with a healthy dose of cynicism of course. Lyrically, Slutty Hearts can turn you on, break your heart, or make you think of all of the things that are fucked with the world with a slight slap of humor. With guy/girl vocals, Marisa Laurelle’s sweet-sung vocal lines soften the edgy punch of Marty Smith’s sardonic ramblings, Slutty Hearts sounds like sucking out the venom of an ex lover in a heart break hotel.
Its true, everyone is forced to grow up at some point. For Slutty Hearts, their sound has evolved from a shoe-gaze/shimmer/dream-folk band into an eclectic upbeat/rock-n-roll/crunch-pop sound with charismatic maturity. Yet Slutty Hearts’ minimalist beginnings still shine on, allowing their songs to be memorable lyrically driven prose that is charmingly catchy.
